IGA FIELD EXCURSION Saturday/Sunday, 15th/16th May, 2010
Dr. Bettie Higgs (University College Cork) will lead a field trip:
THE SILURIAN AND DEVONIAN STRATIGRAPHY OF THE DINGLE PENINSULA, CO. KERRY
MEETING POINT: Meet outside the Heritage Centre, Ballyferriter town, (not Dingle town) Saturday morning. Lunch will also be in Ballyferriter on Saturday.
TIME: Morning 9.30am Saturday 15th.

The geology of the Dingle Peninsula gives us a unique insight into the final phase of the closing of the Iapetus Ocean. We will see evidence for the change in palaeoenvironment from one of shallow marine volcanic islands in the Silurian to the arid non-marine wind blown/fluviatile setting immediately after this event the closing of the Ocean. The fieldtrip will also concentrate on the biodiversity evidenced by the Silurian and Devonian fossil assemblages. An update on the continuously threatened geoheritage of the area will be given, and include a visit to the new section of the Inch Conglomerate.

IGA Geologists will lead a field trip:
MINERAL HUNT - GLENDALOUGH / GLENDASAN OLD MINE WORKINGS, CO. WICKLOW
MEETING POINT: Glendalough Visitor / Interpretive Centre public car park (free parking). Take the R756 west of Laragh village for 1 Km, take left fork R757 towards Glendalough, car park on left just past fork.
TIME: 10.30am
IGA Geologists will lead a mineral hunt fieldtrip to the old mine workings in the Glendalough Valley and after lunch to nearby Glendasan Valley workings. Strong footware is advised, we will be walking for a several kilometers mostly on tracks, and scree slopes will be encountered. A hammer (with eye protection) and handlens would be usefull. Bring a pack lunch or alternatively the hotel does soup etc. Finish time depends on the weather.
